This article is a response to an article by Lidor (2008), dealing with the disjunction between research and teaching. In this article, I suggest two promotion pathways at colleges. One emphasizes research over teaching, and the second emphasizes teaching over research. The academic world in general, and nomination committees in particular, accept a preconceived hierarchy, wherein research is favored over teaching. While this article does not question the importance of research, it argues that teaching institutions – and indeed research facilities – may benefit from accepting both pathways as equally legitimate courses, thereby improving human resources management of higher education without leading to a demand for additional financial resources.
