Teachers in institutions of higher education occasionally encounter work by students which they suspect was copied from another piece of work (e.g., book or article), or work that includes citations without proper references. These may be considered as illegal use (plagiarism). Academia regards such cases as dishonest actions that do not match normal expectations from a student, and set heavy penalties accordingly. The present article summarizes some definitions related to plagiarism and suggests some correct ways to use and cite sources.
